Apr 4th, 2009 by Ben HIMSS / MSHUG: A Comprehensive Health System with HealthVault Using Silverlight and CUI

For the second afternoon session, I was excited to attending a session entitled “Integration of a Comprehensive Medical and Dental EMR System with Microsoft HealthVault Using Microsoft Silverlight and Microsoft Health Common User Interface”. I didn’t realize, however, that I was walking into a commercial for ushealthrecord. After getting past my initial frustration, I was incredibly impressed with what they presented.

ushealthrecord is both a PHR, an EMR, and an HIE (of sorts). By building a GUI on top of HealthVault, patients can search for providers and then share their records with providers that they want to establish a relationship with. The provider then can pull up the records and add to them using the ushealthrecord EMR.

The EMR is incredibly impressive. The GUI is attractive and the workflow appears to be well thought out. The EMR is template based and while there is not the level of detail seen in other EMRs, the templates that were shown seem complete.

In addition to typical EMR functionality such as e-prescribing, ushealthrecord also allows for the purchase of a number of apps (a rip-off of Apple, but a cool idea), imbedded secure instant messaging, imbedded secure emails, and the ability to sync with HealthVault. Some other goodies I liked were the ability to process claims directly at bedside (perfect for very small offices) in addition to sending to billing, one-click insurance verification, electronic referrals, and the ability to see quick patient information by mousing over the schedule. Oh, and the EMR is both for medical and dental.

I can’t possibly do ushealthrecord justice in this blog, but I’m going to follow up with them after the conference. If what I saw today is for real, these guys have really gotten it right!

I also attended this presentation by US Health Record. It was the only presentation from a company that was founded by and headed up by medical professionals who have far greater knowledge on how to solve these issues than the software/IT professionals. As an investment banker I am extremely excited about this company. It is precisely this type of company that will drive the needed changes into the IT Health space that have been so slow in coming. The larger software/IT companies have little incentive to change until they are forced to do so. After learning more about Microsoft’s commitment to this space, I can see a whole new landscape emerging in this industry in the next several years. Likewise, one of Microsoft’s key executives in this space is an M.D. as well. I will be looking for investment oportunities in US Health Record and other companies with a similar attitude and expertise. Jim Holder, Partner – InvestLinc Private Capital

I wish I had been able to attend this presentation. Having been around PHR, EMR, HIPAA security, EDI and the concept of the National Health Information Network (RHIOs, etc.) for a long time it is encouraging to see that some progress is being made. Now as an investment banker in the health care information technology space it will be interesting to see if these companies can actually obtain traction in the market. There are many good ideas out there for health care improvement from a technology perspective…but the big question seems to remain…”WHO PAYS FOR IT?” Perhaps UShealthrecord has that figured out. Hope so!
